News: Chicago Teachers’ Strike Enters Third Day

Contract negotiations between striking teachers and public school administrators here were scheduled to begin late Wednesday morning, although as the strike enters its third day, there is no indication that a resolution is near. In the view of some here, the toxic relationship between Karen Lewis, president of the Chicago Teachers Union, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel, whom Ms. Lewis has called a “bully” and a “liar,” has helped push the city’s teacher contract talks to the point of a crisis, forcing 350,000 students out of their classrooms in the nation’s third-largest school system not long after the new academic year began. Various sources have confirmed that pioneering hip-hop executive Chris Lighty has died. The native of the Bronx died today of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The powerhouse behind Violater Records and management guided the careers of hip-hop heavyweights like 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliot. Lighty began his career working for DJ Red Alert. He became a road manager for Boogie Down Productions and managed groups like The Jungle Brothers and A Tribe Called Quest. He was given the nickname “Baby Chris” for his good looks and to distinguish himself from his older friend Chris Ali.

A porn star has tested positive for syphilis, which has lead to the Free Speech Coalition, an industry trade group, to put the shooting of porn on hiatus while performers are tested. Last Friday, the Los Angeles County Public Health Department announced that they were investigating at least five possible cases of syphilis that were reported last week. Now the trade group wants more than 1,000 performers in the sex industry to be tested. [Read More]

They started it! It was Chris Brown and Drake themselves - and not their posses - that set off a bottle throwing fracas at a Manhattan nightclub, a $16 million lawsuit claims. In papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, Entertainment Enterprises says the two stars started mixing up it at the joint clubs Greenhouse and WiP on June 14th, and then ordered their crews to follow suit. After filming director Harmony Korine's upcoming dark comedy Spring Breakers, actress Selena Gomez is already moving onto her next mature indie role. The former Disney star has been cast in Tim Garrick's "Parental Guidence Suggested", a rock n' roll-centric coming-of-age film said to be based on the Ric Browde book "While I'm Dead...Feed the Dog". It doesn't really matter what stocks you're looking at. Wal-Mart (WMT) and Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) are both well-known and very large-capitalization stocks.
